Home Business Opportunities 2010

Question: UC Santa Cruz or UC Riverside: Business Management Economics. Which one?

Take 2:
I was recently accepted to both UCSC and UCR as a transfer student with a declared major in Economics. My primary goal was to go into Business Admin: Finance but that would limit me to Riverside and i'd also have to wait till Fall 2010 rather than transferring this coming Winter quarter. I was told by multiple professors that Business Admin. Finance is the best fit. I am also considering going to Riverside declared as Economics then transfer my major to Business the following quarter. I already really like UCSC over UCR due to the environment, location, and i'll be closer to home and my friends. (SF)

BUT, which school would better suit me in attaining/preparing me for my future goal of working in the field of real estate?
Which would provide better internship opportunities?
Which is considered academically superior? (i know they are both really good schools "both in the top 100 public universities" but at the lower end of the UC system)

Answer: I would suggest you go with your personal preference. No matter how great the opportunity a campus may provide, you will likely be miserable if you don't like the environment.

How well you will do after you graduate depends largely on the kind of person you are (I have known Berkeley grads who worked at the Macy's counter in SF). Individuals who are good with people and who are aggressive tend to do better in the real estate field. If you are good with people (know how to network) and aggressive, you will likely find good internships not otherwise available to the more passive students.

The U.S. News ranks UCSC at #29 and UCR at #43. Source: http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/national-top-public

Home Business Insurance Cost

Question: Is it fair that the NRA was able to force Life Insurance companies to change the way they do business?

The NRA has successfully won a court case forcing insurers to drop surcharges on people who indicate they have a gun in their home.

Life Insurance companies take many things into consideration when calculating premiums including lifestyle habits like smoking and drinking, if you ski, if you are married and one consideration is if you have a gun in your home, the actuaries (mathematicians) calculate you have a higher chance of death so they increase premiums a bit to compensate.

The NRA, seeing that proof that guns shorten lifespan, sprang into action to “protect consumers” and forced them through a law suit not to do that. Of course the actuaries will simply add the price in for everyone now costing non-gun owners more money. Is that fair? If it is, should big tobacco also file a law suit? Should single people?

Answer: It doesn't sound fair to me. It isn't fair to people who have less risky lifestyles in terms of health or guns in the house or whatever to have the costs from loss of revenue from the riskier parties passed on to them.
