Home Based Business Ideas For Moms

home based business ideas for moms
Question: Do you need a license in North Carolina to sell food from home?

I LOVE baking and making chocolate and have been toying with the idea of starting a Home Based Business... especially since I'm going to be a single mom & can't afford daycare - not to mention the fact that I don't like the idea of strangers raising my child. At the same time, I don't really know where to start. I've looked on the secretary of state website for more information regarding starting home based food businesses in N.C., but seem to be hitting brick walls. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Does anyone know any good books I can maybe check out regarding home bakery/ chocolate businesses, too? Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you.
Oh, and does anyone have any ideas of costs that may be involved? I'm thinking I'll have to factor in food costs, business cards, licenses (if needed), perhaps a car magnet (advertising purposes), website if I really want to grow... anything else?

Answer: Sounds like you have some good ideas, but you need to get legal first. To sell food from home, you must be approved by the Department of Health. Most require stainless steel working space and a many other things. Go to your local SBA office (sba.gov) and they will give you a good start. You need to also call your Health Dept. for information on approving your kitchen and routine inspections. You're looking at a few thousand dollars I'm sure. I don't know any books on it, I'm not in that business. Good luck!
