Question: Starting a business having a sewing machine and little money?

I have got a new sewing machine at home and I am thinking of start making something to put on e bay and even organize a blog with the "new things". I am not sure of what to start with, I have a friend who makes accessories: neckless, bags, etc. So I don't want to copy her, but I do not know what to do...

Answer: Mariah - I read your question and immediately thought of this gent who makes custom cordura items for motorcyclists and advertises them on a bulletin board site dedicated to riding enthusiasts.

Now, my point here is not for you to be the next great sewer of motorcycle tool or ditty bags but rather to look at things that interest you outside your sewing hobby and see if you can find a market (similar to this fellow) that has a need.

I'll give you another real life example. My mother-in-law is crazy about horses and is actually quite a good seamstress, she has a side business fixing saddle blankets and advertises at a couple of local horse barns and show stables. Nothing fancy, all word of mouth and she does a bang-up job and makes a good bit of coin on the side.

Here again, two hobbies that intersect to provide income.

So what are your passions outside of sewing? I bet you can do the same.
