Question: What is VPN and why would I need it to work on my business from home?

I'm sure I sound like an idiot, but before I spend money on something or talk to my IT guy about I'd like to sound like I know what I'm talking about.

Can't I just sign on to our network from home?

I tried reading the wikipedia site. It didn't make a lot of sense. It was all acronyms.
What I can't figure out is why I would NEED a VPN? Is it just for security?

Answer: You company may already have a VPN. I would talk to your IT people first before installing anything. Typically you can't just install a VPN client on a remote computer and access a corporate network.
